Character Information

Name: Eri Marshall
Canon: Original Character
Canon Point: End of history.
Age: 18
History: Before I get into Eri's personal history, here's some background on the world she comes from. For the most part, it's a modern, world is virtually identical to the real world. The biggest difference is the presence of a spiritual or 'unconscious' world that coexists with the normal or 'waking' world.

This world operates on three, separate levels: first is the Waking World which is the material, mundane world normal beings live and is roughly equivalent to the Noragami's Near Shore. Second is the unconscious world or 'The Between' which is generally only accessible to humans through lucid dreaming, ritual, or subconscious psychic phenomena. Normal humans will occasionally and naturally dip into this level for the most part are rarely capable of direct, conscious interaction with it. The third and final level is the immaterial or 'The Beyond' which is where most spiritual and psychic activity takes place. Denizens of The Beyond include everything from ghosts, to demons, to gods, to sentient beings born from mankind's collective unconscious. Some are benevolent, some are malevolent, others may be completely disinterested in humans. It's a pretty varied population. While some humans, such as psychics and spirit mediums, are born with the natural ability to tap into the Between and the Beyond, for the most part, the only way for most humans to consciously access either to is through occult ritual.

During the course of these rituals, spiritual or psychic energy is exchanged between the Waking World, The Between, and The Beyond. Over time, this energy can accumulate in or around a person, turning them into a magnet for psychic or spiritual phenomena. Sometimes beings from The Beyond will mark or spiritually 'stain' an individual that has attracted their attention.

Now that the background's set, moving on to Eri herself.

Eri is the youngest of four children born to middle class parents in Astoria, Queens in New York City. She has two older brothers and an older sister. The Marshall children are third generation Japanese-American through their mother's side and fourth generation Irish-American through their father's side. Eri's maternal grandparents own a grocery store in Queens. Eri's mother works as a translator for a Japanese apparel company. Her father works as a novelist from home.

Both of Eri's parents are alcoholics. A a result, Eri grew up in a tense, chaotic home colored by frequent conflict. Her parents have had an an unfriendly, toxic marriage for as long as Eri can remember. She spent most of her childhood witnessing her parents emotionally abuse one another regardless of sobriety. Occasionally, Eri and her siblings found themselves on the receiving end of a drunken outburst but for the most part, the children were ignored as much as possible without inviting outside intervention. In order to cope with their parents' neglect, the Marshall children turned to each other for nurturing, support, and guidance.

Eri was a difficult child for an adult to manage, let alone children only a few years her senior. She was an active, adventurous girl with a short attention span, excessive energy, and unrelenting curiosity. Eri was always on the go and easily distracted by new interests. She struggled academically and socially at school due to undiagnosed ADHD but her parents never replied to notes home requesting a conferences. Even though, Eri was a bright girl, she remained a solid B and C student throughout her schooling.

Eri didn't make friends easily, many of her peers finding her flitty or obnoxious. She had a tendency to talk more than listen and get easily distracted by new activities, ideals, and friends. During middle school, Eri began taking an interest in the paranormal and occult after watching a TV special. The otherworldly offered her an escape from boredom and negative influences in her life but it also set her apart from the norm. Most of the people she hung out with were other misfits.

She began taking a more active interest in her ancestry when a Japanophile classmate introduced her to anime. She soon developed an fascination with Japanese folklore and mythology and began to collect anime, manga, and books featuring those subjects. It was only a matter of time before she discovered Japanese urban legends and creepypasta games and began to dabble in both for escapist thrills. The games offered the restless girl a respite from a life she found otherwise intolerable.

So did writing, drawing, and cosplay. By the time Eri entered high school, she was drawing fanart and writing self-insert fanfic of questionable quality for her favorites series, Cadet Sol, a magical girl show about teens at a military academy battling invaders from outer space. The same classmate that introduced her to anime also introduced her to video games on a portable console. Eri used both as a means of catharsis for the stress she experienced at home.

As Eri grew older and her home life became increasingly toxic, she began to stay away from home as much a possible. She developed a dream of being a professional ghost hunter and started saving and investing her money in a camera, a minicamcorder, and cassette recorder to get herself started. She spent as many hours away from home, exploring old abandoned buildings and chasing leads on the weird or unusual.

Due to the inconsistent parenting Eri and her siblings received and peer rejection at school, she never really learned how to form secure emotional attachments with others. It became standard for the Marshall children to move out as soon as soon as they turned eighteen to pursue their own lives than remain in such an unhealthy environment. One by one, Eri's elder siblings moved out, leaving her alone to deal with their parents and their mess of a household.

Eri took on a placater role with her parents, trying her to best to accomodate them and divert their attention from each other to herself by keeping the house clean, making sure bills got paid, and doing better in school. Some of her trips away from home were to the library to study.

When Eri was a sophomore in high school, her only friend at school moved away, adding salt to the wounds left behind by her siblings. Things did look up, however, when she made a new friend, Niko Wolfe. Their friendship was awkward in the beginning but over time, they got accustomed to each other and grew to enjoy each others company. They made an odd pair on campus, dark, broody Niko and sunny, light-hearted Eri but complemented each other well. In Niko, Eri found the stability and support she'd been without for so long and before long, the pair were often found together.

This drew the unfortunate attention of a former acquaintance of Niko's, Slade, who happened to be a misogynist, budding sociopath, and a gang leader. He did not take kindly to this weird, annoying girl getting close to Niko due to a pre-existing fixation on him and proceeded to interfere by harassing Eri. Slade took things out of her locker and threw them all over the hallway, bullied her, and had members of his gang follow her around. There were other behaviors of Slade's that drew Eri's attention and she did a little investigating into the boy, learning that her new enemy came from an alcoholic household as well. In an attempt to ease her own feelings of isolation as well as make a friend out of an enemy, Eri tried to reach out to Slade which only antagonized him and added fuel to the fire.

The situation drew Niko's attention as well but Eri insisted on handling it her way, even after Slade shoved her down a flight of stairs, causing her to break her dominant wrist. Niko honored Eri's wishes and let her handle it but in the end, it proved to be a terrible mistake. The harrassment escalated further. This combined with Eri's growing habit of repressing negative emotions and Slade's growing impatience and frustration at Niko not responding to his provocations led to the latter abducting the former in order to scare her.

Eri was lured away from her home and after a brief struggle, the girl was overpowered and kidnapped. She was taken to an abandoned building not far from the public school she and Niko attended where he was blindfolded, gagged, and left to stew in fear. Eri was only there for a few hours before Niko came to rescue her but the damage had already been done. With nothing but her own terrified thoughts and turbulent emotions and no means to escape from them, Eri suffered a breakdown. Niko escorted her home where she discovered both of her parent drunk and passed out. They had never even noticed she was missing.

Eri never reported the incident to the police, instead wanting to just put it behind her. After a few day of resting at home, she went back to school where she immediately began to avoid Slade and his cronies, instead sticking close to Niko and when he couldn't stay, his friend, Jack. It was a painful week for Eri, one during which she was competely depressed, anxious, and suffering from dangerously low self-esteem. Eventually, Niko couldn't take it anymore and went after Slade and though she never learned the details of exactly what had transpired, she knew that Niko had burned his hand. Eri felt guilty about it and blamed herself for the whole situation.

Shortly after, Niko's parents pulled him out of school and Slade was transferred out. Still, the damage had been done and once again, Eri was left alone. Her previous problems with her peers still existed and she began to feel like the people she'd hung out with before were just sticking around because of convenience rather than genuine affection. Eri became increasingly withdrawn from her classmates and this behavior was reinforced by her parents' continued disinterest in her. To make matters worse, Niko dropped contact with her following his transfer for reasons of his own but never stated to her. This perceived abandonment deeply wounded Eri but she repressed the hurt and resentment rather than process it.

During her junior and senior year of high school, Eri became increasingly entrenched in the world of the paranormal. Most of her free time was spent exploring haunted subways, apartment buildings, or researching rituals and trying them out behind her locked bedroom door. Over time, Eri had moved away from fanfic and begun a video blog devoted to her activities and developed a following on the internet. As her activities took on a reckless, self-destructive edge, various online contacts warned her against playing around with forces she couldn't see or understand but the warning came much too late. By this point, she had accumulated a substantial amount of spiritual energy from her activities though she had yet to see actual ghosts with her own two eyes.

However, Eri's natural ability to access The Between when she slept expanded into an ability to venture into the dreams of others as they slept. Eri began studying dreams and dream interpretation in order to decode the strange things she saw at night but for the most part, didn't take her experiences very seriously. Ultimately, they were just weird dreams in her eyes.

In October of her senior year, Eri went on a campus tour of a local junior college. Much to their mutual surprise, she ran into Niko, who was a student there. After some initial awkwardness, the pair decided to tour the campus together and catch up. It turned out to be a good icebreaker in the long run. The pair were able to pick up where they left off, though at times their relationship could be strained due to unresolved issues from before their separation.

Once they were accustomed to being in each other's lives again, they talked about what had transpired before with Slade. Eri told Niko that he regretted not letting him intervene before the situation escalated to the point it did and that she hadn't trusted him completely back then, due to her parents' alcoholism and all the people in her life continually letting her down. She also told him that she blamed herself for what happened with his hand. She'd thought the reason why he didn't contact her was because he regretted saving her, which turned out to not be the case at all. Niko apologized for his lack of contact and the pair were able to resolve things. Once they cleared the air, the lingering awkwardness dissipated and they were rapidly falling back into their old rhythm.

Much of Eri's free time began to be diverted toward spending time with Niko. She'd camp out in the coffee shop he worked at and do her homework or just surf the net and chat him up on break. When Niko wasn't working or in class, Eri would drag him along on her ghost hunts and experiments with rituals. With Niko there, it was easy for her to slip into believing it was all just a game again. Her odd dreams were quickly forgotten.

One day in December of her senior year, an anonymous fan of Eri's video blog sent information on something called the Gate to the Psyche ritual. She decided to try it then called up Niko since she needed a person to guide her through it. The ritual itself sounded harmless, like little more than a guided meditation just with some candles so she figured it would be safe. None of her investigation or other forays had turned up anything concrete and there was Eri had no way of knowing that this one would be any different than the others.

The ritual required Eri to lay with her head in Niko's lap while she visualized herself going through different corridors and doorways in her mind. She didn't take it seriously at first and neither did Niko, not until the maze of corridors and closed doors she imagined in her mind felt more real than the physical world around her. Unknown to her, Eri had lapsed into unconsciousness with Niko frantically trying to wake her up. All Eri knew were the hallways in front of her along with the mysterious doors. At first, it was fun and exciting. For once, a ritual had yielded actual results and she soon forgot the rules she was supposed to obey, such as not talk to entities she met while she was under.

For a while, it was a grand adventure. Eri conversed with various figures she'd later learn were Jungian archetypes though she would never remember what they'd said. However, it swiftly turned dangerous when Eri encountered a mysterious doppelganger of herself that seemed to be perpetually shrouded in darkness. The figure chased her through the corridors and Eri tried door after door, trying to escape it, before finally finding the one she'd entered from. There was a struggle between and her shadowy double in which the door was torn off its hinges. At the time, Eri didn't know that this was the door that separated her from the in-between and that she was now permanently stained by the experience. Finally, Niko managed to wake up her up. They decided to stop the ritual immediately, not bothering to even complete it.

After that night, Eri's world as she knew it forever changed. As a result of the staining, she now had the ability to perceive The Beyond that most people remained unaware of. For years, Eri wished to see real ghosts and now she could - along with spirits, demons, and strange nightmarish creatures born from humanity's darkness. She tried to tell Niko about it but he appeared to be in denial that anything had even happened. The pair began to drift apart again, leaving Eri to cope with having one foot in the world of the dead and one in the living all alone and aggravating her repressed feelings over his previous abandonment.

General Description: Eri is an athletic young woman with long, wavy, red hair, big brown eyes, and light skin. She's roughly 5'5", about 120lbs, and lightly muscled from frequent exercise. For the most part, she looks more Japanese than Caucasian; the only real giveaway is the red hair. She has an oval face, high cheekbones, a pointed chin, a button nose, and long thick eyelashes.

There's a graceful, bounding quality to most of her movements, almost as if Eri is galloping through life. Her body language tends to be restless, as if she's uncomfortable sitting still.  She's often fidgety, sometimes to an obnoxious degree, the type who's always tapping her foot, fingers, pencil, etc. It's rare to see her completely at rest. As a result, she often looks a little tense.

Eri has some faint, minor scarring on her hands, elbows, knees, and feet from the odd childhood accident growing up. She also has a small brown birthmark in the hairline of the nape of her neck.
She looks closer to sixteen than eighteen with her youthful, innocent looks. She seldom sticks to just one hairstyle and can be found wearing her hair in ponytails, twintails, braids, hair buns, and sometimes quirky combinations of all of the above. She's a big fan of accessories - ribbons, bows, barrettes, scrunchies, etc.

Given the opportunity to do so, Eri dresses in cute, "weeaboo" clothing as part of embracing her heritage, so hoodies with cat ears or shirts emblazoned with anime characters or cartoon mascots are common. She also wears a lot of imported shirts with strange or inappropriate Engrish on them. For the most part, her shoes are of the casual, comfortable, athletic variety, chosen more for practicality.

In general, Eri's voice is a peppy, animated, mezzo soprano. Occasionally, she can get loud but for the most part, exercises proper volume control. Given a choice in the matter, she smells faintly of vanilla and soap.

Personality: Outwardly, Eri is cheerful and energetic, approaching life with an almost childish enthusiasm and wonder. At first, she seems to be a very positive, outgoing, and friendly person who makes and keeps friends easily but upon much closer examination, cracks appear in that, revealing her facade for what it is and displaying a much darker undercurrent to her personality.

Those who manage to get closer to Eri, generally notice that she has a morbid sense of humor and a rather flippant nihilistic streak. It's not uncommon for her to laugh at serious, heavy subjects or make horrifying comments with a smile. It's not that she doesn't understand the gravity of situations or serious issues; she does with very keen clarity, often to a brutally cynical degree. She just accepts it as the way it is and adapts to that harsh reality rather than make an active effort to change it. In her mind, the world sucks, relationships are transient and inconstant, and it's better to accept it and move on than fight against it. She has a somewhat hedonistic approach to life. Her basic motto is to enjoy the good people and times while they last and not waste her time shedding tears or looking back once they come to an end. She's very focused on the present and the future.

History: A Japanese-American girl from New York City from a broken home. Her parents are alcoholics, her extended family is estranged, and her siblings, unwilling to stay in a toxic home any longer than they have to, have all left home and become wrapped up in their own lives. Due to parental neglect and a general lack of strong connections with people, Eri has grown up to be fiercely independent and autonomous but at the cost of her self-worth. To escape her generally shitty home life, Eri's taken refuge in occult interests – odd rituals and games, ghost hunting, as well as various internet hobbies. At some point in high school, screwed up a ritual and cursed herself to be a gateway to the spirit world.

Presently, she is a recent high school graduate on her way to college.

Lvl. 1 (Regained in October 2015)

Eri's ability to see invisible/incorporeal entities. At this point, they only appear to her in random, infrequent flashes that last only a few seconds in length. She has no control over them and can't activate it at will. She may be able to see a vague, indistinct shape if something has a particularly strong presence but she won't be able to tell what it is and she has to concentrate in order to see anything at all which given her focusing issues will be a feat all by itself. If she doesn't concentrate, she's completely blind to it, regardless of how much presence it has.

Lvl. 2 (Regained in December 2015)

Eri's ability to see invisible/incorporeal entities begins to stabilize. Flashes become more frequent and last up to thirty seconds. At times, she can activate it at will if she concentrates but these fizzle out after only a few seconds. Presences are a little more distinct so she's able to pick out a little more detail. In addition to sight, her visions start to have sound as well though the "volume" is very quiet and indistinct. However, she still can't interact/communicate with these entities directly.

(She's trying to use this as sort of spiritual radar but it's not really designed for that. That doesn't stop her brain from filling in gaps with imagined details in an attempt to make sense of what she does pick up. Also, just an additional note of how I'm running her power in play, I've started using RNG/percentages to determine whether she has a flash or not when something's around.)

Eri's Mother

Eri's mother, Naoko, is second generation Japanese-American and while she's largely assimilated into American life, she had traditional Japanese values such as harmony, obedience, and interdependence instilled in her by her own parents. Naoko was raised using traditional parenting techniques such as relying on the bond between mother and child to curb bad behavior as well emphasizing the family as a collective. Naoko's own mother, Masako, was responsible for most of the child-rearing while her own father played the role of bread winner. Since this was the parenting that Naoko knew, it resurfaced in her own style with her own children.

Being the youngest of the Marshall litter, Naoko had three kids worth of parenting experience by the time she got to Eri. She was fairly lenient and relaxed with Eri compared to her older siblings. However, her drinking problem had more time to worsen so Naoko's alcoholism is a large cornerstone of their relationship. For the most part, Naoko neglected Eri, often delegating her care to her older siblings or babysitters, so she could protect her drinking. When Naoko did interact with Eri, it was often in an emotionally exploitative and manipulative manner with the intent to maintain control of her drinking.

To complicate their relationship further, Naoko knew she was a bad mother and felt guilty about it but could not overcome her dependency on alcohol. Eri, being a perceptive and empathetic girl, picked up on the fact that her mother was unhappy with her marriage, depressed about the estrangement with her own parents over her choice in husband. She was aware that her mother's drinking worsened when her parents fought so she strived to make her smile and lift her spirits in the hope that Naoko might love her and take more of an interest in her. It didn't really work which ended up with Eri developing a pattern of compulsive, fatalistic humor sharing in a misguided attempt to cheer others up. The repeated failures also reinforced her suppressed nihilism and low self-esteem.

Eri's Father

Much like Naoko, Douglas is an alcoholic. Protecting his drinking is his first concern, even over supporting his wife and family. He's a workaholic, frequently spending much time away from home. Douglas is very preoccupied with his role as the breadwinner of the family, a fact that he doesn't let anyone in the Marshall family forget. His alcoholism has interfered with his functioning on the job; for example, he frequently takes a flask to work. This is a fact that Eri is well aware of and it causes her significant anxiety because she worries about him losing his job which in turn could result in financial disaster at home. This is a worry her mother also shares and it's a topic frequently fought about among Eri's parents, in addition to circular arguments and finger pointing at who's to blame for the mess. Unlike Naoko, Douglas feels very little guilt about what he's doing to his family; he generally blames 'troublesome' kids or his co-workers incompetence for his drinking.

For the most part, Douglas is a strongly negative peripheral influence on Eri's life since when he isn't at work, he's at the bar, and when he's home he's usually drunk or passed out. However, when he does interact with Eri and her siblings, it's in an emotionally abusive manner. He puts them down, complains about them being more trouble than they're worth, blames them or Naoko for the house being a mess or money being tight that month, etc. Douglas is particularly critical of Eri, often calling her a disappointment, 'fucking weird', saying that she'll never amount to anything, and putting down her interests and passions. It's had a detrimental effect on Eri, instilling deep set insecurities, anxiety, a lack of self-love, in addition to a lot of repressed anger. Douglas is also the root of her placater complex.

Eri's Siblings

In Japanese families, siblings are expected to be closer than in the West. Given Naoko's parenting techniques and upbringing, there are shades of this belief among the Marshall children. Naoko raised them to value interdependence and it's because of this sentiment that the children were able to survive emotionally in a toxic household where they largely felt unwanted. To say that that Marshall children became a mini-family within the family

Eri's oldest brother, Chris, the firstborn of the Marshall litter, was a hardworking, serious, take charge boy five years older than Eri. He stepped into the leadership role and looked after his younger siblings. He was bossy but mature and responsible for his age. If his siblings were fighting or needed discipline, he was the one to separate them and enforce time outs. Due to the five year age gap, Eri's relationship with Chris was largely friendly and conflict free. When their brother, Evan, or someone at school picked on her, Chris was always the one to put him in his place. His frequent bravery inspired Eri to view him as a role model. Much of Eri's own fearless behavior is modelled after him. Chris moved out when Eri was fourteen, an event that she took hard.

Eri's sister, Amanda, three years her senior, stepped up to the plate in his absence. For most of Eri's childhood, Amanda was the calm, temperate, mediating influence in the household. While initially timid and shy, Eri's sister eventually outgrew those qualities and became a very perceptive, prudent, if reserved girl. If Chris was the sibling that stopped the conflicts, Amanda was the one that went about actually resolving them and cleaning up the messes. Even though Eri isn't particularly successful in her attempts, she does strive to be more like Amanda, finding her quiet strength of conviction and dedication to her goals admirable. The sisters are fairly close and Eri has a lot of love, admiration, and respect for her, even though they often disagree. Speaking poorly of or messing with Amanda is something of a berserk button for Eri.

Then there's her older brother, Evan. Of all the siblings, Evan is the one that Eri has the most conflict with. They're close in age, barely a year apart. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Evan is also the sibling that Eri has the most common in with. Both creative, outgoing, fun-loving types, prank wars between the two siblings were common as was frequent bickering. Both were rowdy, energetic children that ran their older siblings ragged. Evan and Eri picked on each other constantly as well as had sort of a competitive rivalry with each other (mostly on Evan's side, Eri was quite secure in her superiority over Evan). While oftentimes, their rivalry was playful, there was a bitter edge to it as well. Their father favored Chris and Amanda but Evan received similar criticism which resulted in him passing off his feelings of inadequacy to Eri. Both siblings have deepset self-esteem issues which has led them to being each other's best friend and worse enemy simultaneously. On one hand, no one within the family understands Eri better than Evan does and can get through to her like he can but on the other, no one can kick her when she's down the way Evan can. Which he has many times on a bad day. This has also compounded on Eri's self-worth issues.

At her canon point, all of Eri's siblings have moved out of the Marshall house, leaving her alone to deal with her parents. The siblings remain in touch but Chris and Amanda are often preoccupied with work and college and too busy with their own lives to play an active role in Eri's. Evan only moved out recently and he's in his first year of college. Like the others, he's also often too busy to make time for Eri. As result, Eri's support net includes Niko and their mutual friend, Jack, but that's it. Since she doesn't want to burden those two with her problems, Eri internalizes a lot of negative thoughts and feelings on top of her repressed rage.

Slade Lawless

Eri's relationship with Slade is one of mutual antagonism. In her case, it's completely unintentional. Due to her upbringing and personality type, Eri is frequently fraught with loneliness. When she first met Slade, she perceived a kindred spirit in him. She verified this feeling by asking around about him, upon which she learned that he was from a broken home, just like her. In general, the research Eri did into Slade was scanty and she did not understand that he was a budding sociopath. Due to her optimism and the public's general inability to fathom true sociopathy, Eri simply made a grievous error in judgment based on compassion and a desire to appease her own loneliness.

Slade didn't like Eri at all for various reasons. For one, she was a girl and he was a misogynist. That was already a black mark against her. For second, she claimed to understand him - a boy who also unfortunately had a combined superiority and inferiority complex toward women. For third, in his opinion, she was weak and deserved to be mistreated. Slade's motivation for harrassing her was as simple as that. He wanted to cause her misfortune because he could and he enjoyed it. She was just an object for him to use to that end and invited it by being a weak girl.

Rather than changing his mind about her as she'd hoped, Eri's bravery and persistence in trying to reach out to him just enraged him further. Slade grew to hate Eri specifically because she was a weak girl that dared to get into his business, all the while acting tough. In her idealism and reluctance to pass negative judgment, Eri kept pushing him until he decided he wanted to break her almost as much as he wanted to break Niko.

It didn't help that Eri and Niko were joined at the hip a lot of the time in public either. Publically, they seemed close and like they made each other happy. Slade assumed they were dating or had an intimate relationship and wanted to destroy it out of pure spiteful impulse toward them both. That was why he kidnapped Eri, locked her up for a few hours, and sent Niko a message telling him what he'd done.

Jack Medrew

Jack is a mutual friend of Niko's and Eri's. She met him through Niko as Jack is a bandmate of his. After Slade broke down Eri, she felt unsafe at school so Eri stayed close to Niko. Since Niko couldn't be with her all the time, he asked Jack to keep an eye on her when he wasn't there. Eri learned that she and Jack were both anime fans and began hanging out with him up until she transferred schools. After that, they simply got busy and fell out of touch until Eri reunited with Niko. At the time of her canon point, Eri is a groupie of their band, the Cracker Jacks.

Brittany Reid

Brittany is the friend that Eri made at her new school after she transferred. Brittany is about as normal and mainstream as can be. Her only real notable features are that she's nice and reached out to the new girl, Eri. Brittany is a completely average teenager aside from having a cellphone addiction which she passed on to Eri. It's very much a surface friendship of convenience. Eri and Brittany like each other enough to hang out and go on outings together but don't really have a deep bond or commitment to each other. Aside from inspiring Eri to try harder to conform socially in order to make her school life easier, Brittany hasn't had much of an impact on her otherwise.

Adam Brooks

He was the school friend that introduced Eri to anime and sparked her interest in her heritage. The pair met in elementary school where they were frequent playmates. Adam was Eri's childhood best friend and the pair continued to be friendly all the way through junior high. Toward the end of ninth grade, Adam announced that his dad's job was transferring him to California and he'd be moving away that summer. It was a lot like having the rug pulled out from under her for Eri, given that Adam was her oldest friend and only consistent companion at school. She took it poorly at the time and it left her with a lot of doubt and uncertainty about her future up until she met Niko. Presently, Adam and Eri are online friends and keep in regular touch via IM and email though they've definitely drifted apart over the years.

The Boyfriends

Since transferring to her new school, Eri's had numerous boyfriends. All of these relationships were essentially casual flings with some sexual experimentation. The boyfriends never lasted more than a couple of months. As a result, Eri is very experienced with flirtation and more in tune with her sexuality that her youthful demeanor might suggest. She's a free-spirited teen but not promiscuous, mostly due to her own inadequacy and intimacy issues.

CHARACTER NAME: Eri Marshall
CHARACTER SERIES: Waking Shadows (OC)

[OOC]

Backtagging: Yes!
Threadhopping: Ask first, please. The answer will usually be yes unless I'm bogged down.
Fourthwalling: She's an OC so that would be silly. So no.
Offensive subjects (elaborate): Sexual assault, cannibalism, pedophilia, necrophilia, and extreme gore are all sensitive subjects for me so please warn me in advance if a scene will contain any of these elements.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Hugs are good! Eri likes hugs and will probably give a confused hug in return.
Kissing this character: Sure, though it will probably lead to some awkwardness on her part for a while. She may pretend it never happened until confronted or just not take it seriously but it depends on the character and their CR.
Flirting with this character: Discuss this with me first so we can make sure we're on the same page on anything that might lead into shippy territory.
Fighting with this character: Sure. She's pretty physically fit and has good muscle memory for punching and kicking courtesy of constant tae bo works out. Ordinarily, tae bo doesn't have any combat use but Niko taught her how to throw punches and kicks that do actual damage. Eri can hold her own against an untrained fighter but someone with real training is likely to win. For the most part, her focus is on simple self-defense and escape. However, she's much more dangerous when she has access to her powers. Her shadow apparition is very dangerous to friend and foe alike since it's savage, brutal, ruled by impulse, and she can't control it. It's also invisible to anyone who can't see ghosts, spirits, etc. In addition, anyone who fights Eri will probably end up fighting her partner, Niko, too, somewhere along the line.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Sure. Minor injuries are fine but if something's going to take her out of commission for a while, ask first.
Killing this character: Ask first.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Sure, but discuss it with me so we can figure out what your character is reading off of her.

Warnings:

Eri suffers from undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety, and depression. It's difficult for her to focus on conversations, especially in text formats. She can be very stubborn, pushy, and irritable at times, particularly with subjects she has strong personal feelings about. She has deep trust issues and difficulties connecting emotionally with others. Though there are a few exceptions to the rule, most friendships will take a lot of time and interaction to build up and even then, she's likely to keep things on a superficial or impersonal level. It's also difficult for her to conform to situations without IC guidance at times.

While she seems friendly and light-hearted on the surface, there is a dark undercurrent to her personality. Eri's emotionally volatile and prone to extreme or antagonistic reactions at times, including victim blaming. She also has a tendency to cope with horrible incidents by laughing at them or making light of them. Some other specific themes to be aware of: alcoholism, depression, mental trauma, anger management difficulties, child neglect, emotional abuse and exploitation pop up in Eri's background. She is the child of a broken home so consider a mature content warning to be permanently in effect though I will try my best to warn for specific things as they come up.

If players are uncomfortable with any of this, they are encouraged to opt out of interaction with her entirely as it is a major part of her character. Feel free to send me a PM or drop a comment on my HMD so I know to avoid tagging you. Just because the character can be an insensitive jerk doesn't mean the player is! So please do not hesitate to contact me directly if there's a problem.
